1. Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

Created in the early 1960s and covering an area of almost 8,000 acres, Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest and most beautiful nature reserves in the northeastern United States, as well as an excellent place to unwind and take a break from the urban bustle. Home to over 250 species of birds and mammals, this place is a perfect destination for wildlife watching and photography.

Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located just 17 miles northwest of Edison and can be reached in about half an hour by car via Hillcrest Road. Some of the features you can check out while exploring this beautiful nature reserve include a series of historical buildings, an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking trails, a wildlife observation center, and numerous picnic areas.

2. New York City

Arguably the most famous metropolis in the entire world, New York City needs little introduction and is, unsurprisingly, the most popular day trip destination among Edison locals looking for a vibrant city where there is always a new activity going on for all types of visitors. Getting from Edison to the heart of Manhattan takes about 45 minutes by car, driving 30 miles northeast along routes I-95 and I-78.

Once you make your way to the city, a great way to start exploring is by walking around Central Park and heading south towards Times Square and further down to the Empire State Building. Some of the areas you should explore while in the city include the Chinatown neighborhood, Soho, Little Italy, Brooklyn, and the Financial District in lower Manhattan.

3. Sandy Hook Unit at Gateway National Recreation Area

Located on a small barrier peninsula, the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area is a beautiful destination that features long, sandy beaches, salt marshes, and numerous fishing spots that attract water sports enthusiasts from all over the region. Located just 30 miles southeast of Edison, this nature reserve can be reached in about 40 minutes by car via Garden State Parkway and route NJ-36.
