Is your car getting harder to start in the morning? Are multiple electronics malfunctioning at once? If so, it might be time to visit your local INFINITI dealership for a new car battery. Here’s a detailed list of the major signs that a car battery is on its last legs.

Your Car Struggles To Start

The clearest indicator that a battery has problems is if you struggle to start your car in the morning. A car’s starter needs a strong surge of electricity to get the engine going. If an aging or damaged battery can no longer reliably deliver that voltage, you may need to get a new one.

Your Jump Starts Are Successful

If you can’t start your car at all, either your battery is permanently dead or it’s only temporarily drained, perhaps because a bad alternator failed to recharge it on your last drive. You can jump-start your car to find out what caused the problem.

After the jump-start, if your engine keeps running, then your alternator is fine and you might have a faulty battery. Of course, you may have also accidentally drained the battery by leaving the stereo or headlights turned on overnight. You’ll know if the battery is really finished if the problem repeats itself again the following morning.

Your Electronics Are Faltering

When an aging battery can no longer store or deliver as much voltage as before, all your electronics will start to have problems. If your power windows, stereo, phone charger, dashboard, windshield wipers, power steering, and headlights all start misbehaving at once when the engine’s turned off, your battery may need to be replaced.

Your Battery Casing Looks Damaged

When batteries become damaged by extreme heat or cold, or simply by age, the casing can start to warp out of shape. If your battery looks anything other than perfectly rectangular, you’ll probably need a new one.

You Smell Leaking Battery Acid

As damaged batteries warp out of shape, they can sometimes crack open, allowing battery acid or gas to leak out. You’re likely to smell this as battery acid has a strong, sulfury stench.

Your Battery’s Connectors Are Corroded

When you observe your battery, look closely at the metal connectors on top. If the connectors have become corroded, they may not be able to conduct electricity properly anymore. This corrosion will often be gray and green in color.
