The transmission is essential as it allows chaotic energy produced by your engine to be directed and controlled. Without a transmission, your engine would stall when you slow down or stop. Transmission components can wear out over time, and they can also become damaged. If this happens, your INFINITI dealer can perform a transmission repair. We'd like you to know a few signs that your transmission could have a problem.
Signs You Need a Transmission Repair at Your INFINITI Dealer
Damaged Transmission Cooler
The transmission cooler is part of your cooling system responsible for cooling the transmission fluid. A transmission can get very hot due to the constant high-speed movement of gears and other components. Unlike the engine, which works best at 185 F to 220 F, the transmission is more effective at a lower 160 F to 200 F.
Transmission fluid enters the transmission cooler. The engine coolant then absorbs the heat in the fluid. The coolant then takes this heat to the radiator for removal. A blocked or damaged cooler prevents the transmission fluid from cooling, and the temperature inside your transmission will rise. A high transmission temperature can damage its components. We'll examine the cooler and repair or replace it.
Engine Warning Light
The transmission doesn't have a warning light of its own. It's so closely connected to the engine that any problem in the transmission automatically affects the engine. For example, a lack of transmission fluid can prevent your gears from shifting, and your car can't move. Sensors in the transmission will notify your car's computer, and the engine light will come on.
The check engine light is arguably the most important warning light on your dash. The sensors that connect to it can detect almost unnoticeable changes in a component and send a warning via the light. If your transmission is developing a problem, it's important to get it checked ASAP. The earlier a problem is examined and prevented, the greater chance we can quickly and inexpensively fix it.
Slow Response
One of the earliest signs of a transmission problem is hesitation when the gears shift. This hesitation can be easy to miss, as it isn't accompanied by any sound. You'll usually feel this slight delay before the gear shifts into its new position. As the problem gets worse, the shifting delay becomes more obvious.
One of the major causes of a slow transmission response is a lack of transmission fluid. This fluid provides the hydraulic power that enables the gears to shift. A lack of fluid also means a leak in the transmission. We'll investigate and seal any leak we find then we'll refill the fluid.
