The alternator is a very misunderstood component. The alternator's job is to produce electricity for all the systems in your INFINITI. As an alternator gets older, it becomes more difficult to produce power. When this happens, it's time to visit your INFINITI dealer for an alternator repair. Burning Smells

If you're smelling burning metal or plastic when you're driving, you could have an alternator problem. As your alternator gets older, its electrical production drops. This reduced power supply means that there won't be enough electricity for all your car's systems. In an attempt to produce more power, your alternator will spin faster. As it overworks, the alternator will heat up and produce a burning metal smell.

Burning plastic is usually a sign that the wiring insulation in the engine is damaged. The power produced by the alternator is carried to all of your car's devices by the wiring system. All your car's wiring is protected by rubber and plastic insulation, but wires can still wear out or break. Broken wires will heat up as the alternator still tries to supply power through them. This additional heat can cause the wires to burn.

Failed Rectifier

Your alternator produces power by spinning. It's connected to a pulley, and via the alternator belt, to the crankshaft. As the crankshaft turns, the alternator belt runs across the alternator pulley. This movement causes the pulley to spin. The spinning movement also spins a bundle of magnets in the heat of the alternator. These magnets generate magnetic energy that is turned into electricity by the stator.

The power from the stator is AC, not the DC your car's systems need. The rectifier in the alternator converts AC to DC and supplies the power to your car's systems. If the rectifier fails, the power generated by the alternator becomes useless and your electrical systems will start failing. We can replace a failed rectifier, and the electrical supply will return to normal.

Damaged Alternator Belt

As we saw above, the alternator belt runs across a series of pulleys. These pulleys included the alternator, the AC compressor, and the pump. The belt is made from toughened rubber, and it's designed for hard-wearing. The belt takes a lot of wear as it works, as it moves continuously when your engine is running.

The belt must be kept at a constant tension. If the belt becomes too loose or too tight, I'll suffer damage and could snap. A snapped alternator belt will cut off your car's electrical supply. We can check the belt and fit a new one if necessary.
